Eight of the 15 kitchens registered at the Chadwick Road food hall were inspected on 30 July and every one came back with the top hygiene rating. Seven more are still waiting for a first visit.
Redbridge Council’s food safety officers inspected eight of the kitchens inside Maison Noor, the halal food hall at 3 Chadwick Road in Ilford town centre, on 30 July 2026, and every one of them has been given the top rating of 5 on the Food Hygiene Rating Scheme. The results were published on the Food Standards Agency register this month.
The eight are Birria Taco, Blob (French Toast Cafe), Bunify, Green Choy, Pad Thai House, Qahwah Club, Shukran Bakalva and Kunefe, and Steakhouse Grill. Each is registered at “Mm Ilford, 3 Chadwick Road, IG1 1EQ”, an address string that appears to date from the building’s first life as Mercato Metropolitano. (Food Standards Agency register: Qahwah Club, Pad Thai House, Steakhouse Grill, Shukran Bakalva and Kunefe, Birria Taco, Blob, Bunify, Green Choy)
Seven more kitchens at the same address are registered but marked “awaiting inspection”: Chai & Chapati, Flip & Sear, Glaze, Heriots Patisserie, Injera Hub Souk, Mrs Potts Chocolate House and Mocktail, and Platter Wala. A business that has registered but not yet been visited has no rating at all, which is different from a low one; councils schedule first visits by risk, and 305 premises across the borough currently sit in the same queue. (FSA register, Redbridge local authority, read 16 August 2026)
What the ratings measure
A hygiene rating is not a review of the food. The inspector scores three things: how hygienically the food is handled (preparation, cooking, cooling, storage), the physical condition of the premises (cleanliness, layout, lighting, ventilation, pest control), and how well the business manages and records food safety. A 5 means the standards were found to be very good on the day of the visit. The rating describes that day, not a guarantee about every day since; a business that disagrees with its score can appeal to the council within 21 days, has a right to reply that is published alongside the rating, and can ask for a re-visit once it has made improvements. Displaying the sticker is voluntary in England, so the register is the reliable place to check. (Food Standards Agency: how the scheme works)
For context, Redbridge is a large register: 2,148 food premises, of which 1,186 (55 per cent) hold a 5, 266 hold a 4, 209 a 3, 33 a 2, 87 a 1 and four a 0. A further 305 are awaiting inspection and 58 are exempt (typically premises where food is not the main activity). Getting a clean sweep of 5s on the first pass of a multi-kitchen site is therefore a good result rather than an automatic one: about 4 per cent of the borough’s premises, 91 of them, carry a 0 or a 1.
The building’s second act
The Chadwick Road hall opened as Mercato Metropolitano in July 2024, converted from a town-centre car park; the council said at the time it had created more than 100 jobs and described it as “a shining example of regeneration” in the words of Cllr Kam Rai, then Deputy Leader. (Redbridge Council news, 15 July 2024) Mercato did not last, and in March 2026 the trade press reported that the site would relaunch as Maison Noor under managing director Atif Amin, formerly of Creams Cafe, with 16 food traders, all halal, and plans for an 850 sq ft soft play area, a deli, a daily farmers’ market and a “shish courtyard”, plus 15 retail units on the mezzanine, some of it subject to planning permission. (The Caterer, 9 March 2026)
Maison Noor’s own site now lists 16 kitchens: Flip & Sear, Bunify, Badiani, Birria Taco, Chai & Chapatti, Ms Potts Chocolate House, Green Choy, Pad Thai House, Steakhouse Grill, Bebek, Qahwah Club, Mocktails by Maison Noor, Glaze, Blob, Heriots and Injera Hub. It also describes a “Launchpad” of incubator stalls for new food businesses, soft play for ages 1 to 10, multifaith rooms and parking at the adjacent ParkBee CitiPark, with a shisha garden and a rooftop garden listed as coming later. Opening hours are 8am to 11pm Monday to Thursday, 8am to midnight Friday and Saturday, and 9am to 11pm on Sunday. (Maison Noor)
A few mismatches between that list and the register are worth noting. Shukran Bakalva and Kunefe holds a 5 at the address but does not appear on the operator’s current line-up, and Badiani, Bebek and the mocktail bar are not registered as separate businesses at 3 Chadwick Road, which may simply mean they are covered by another registration. Platter Wala is on the register but not the website. None of that affects the ratings themselves.
What it means for you
- If you eat there: the eight kitchens named above have been checked and rated 5. The other seven have not yet been inspected; that is normal for a new business and not a mark against them, but if it matters to you, the register is the place to look, and each entry updates the day a rating is published.
- If you run a food business in Redbridge: 305 premises in the borough are waiting for a first visit, so do not expect one quickly. Registering with the council at least 28 days before you start trading is a legal requirement, and the inspection scores management and record-keeping as heavily as the kitchen.
- If you are choosing where to open: the Chadwick Road hall is two minutes from Ilford station on the Elizabeth line, and the operator says its Launchpad stalls are aimed at start-up traders. Our Ilford planning news page tracks town-centre applications, and Things to do in Ilford carries the practical detail on the surrounding cultural quarter.
Ilford Today reads the FSA register for every Redbridge premises each month and reports the low ratings as well as the high ones. Ratings on this page were read on 16 August 2026 and are correct as published on that date.
