Ilford switches on its Christmas lights at 5.30pm on Saturday 21 November, with fireworks to 6.30pm, a snow fall and 100 market stalls. Free, no ticket needed.

Christmas inIlford is booked for Saturday 21 November 2026, on the High Road in Ilford town centre. Entry is free. The Ilford Business Improvement District, which runs it, has now published a full running order: the lights and the tree are switched on at 5.30pm, with fireworks and a confetti blast from 5.30pm to 6.30pm.

Updated 28 September: the BID has published times for the switch-on, the fireworks, Santa’s grotto and a new snow fall experience. The drone show it advertised earlier this month no longer appears on either of its listings.

That makes Ilford’s the earliest of the borough’s town centre switch-ons, and by some distance the biggest.

What is confirmed

The BID’s event page for 2026 confirms the date, the location (Ilford Town Centre), free entry, and the programme: a “professionally choreographed fireworks show”, fair rides, stunt shows, flame performance and acrobatics, live stage performances, and the Christmas talent competition winners. The “synchronised illuminated drones” it listed in early September are no longer on the page.

The market runs across three days, 20 to 22 November, with 100 stalls selling gifts, food, decorations and crafts. That is worth knowing: the market is not only on switch-on day.

The BID’s Eventbrite listing is the only source with times on it, and its full agenda now reads:

Saturday 21 November Time
Christmas food and beverage market 9am to 6.30pm
Fair rides 9am to 6.30pm
Musical and dance performances 11.30am to 5pm
Santa’s grotto 12pm to 5pm
Snow fall experience 4pm to 6.30pm
Lights and tree switch-on 5.30pm
Fireworks 5.30pm to 6.30pm
Confetti blast 5.30pm to 6.30pm

The listing now says “Free entry, No ticket required, Simply turn up”. The one thing that needs booking is Santa’s grotto, which it describes as “booking required, limited spaces”; registering on the Eventbrite page gets you first access to grotto bookings.

What has not been confirmed

Whether the drone show is still happening. It was on the BID’s page in early September and has since gone from both listings. Until the BID says otherwise, do not travel for it.

No road closure has been published. The stretch of the High Road outside Redbridge Town Hall, where the stage and most of the market go, is a pedestrianised precinct, so a full traffic order may not be needed. Neither the BID nor Redbridge Council has published one as of 28 September. Anything that does appear will be on our Ilford roadworks and travel page.

No stage line-up. The vocal and talent competition finals are named, the performers are not.

How 2026 compares with last year

Last year’s event, on Saturday 22 November 2025, ran longer. The Ilford Recorder reported that it opened at 11.30am and ran to 7.30pm, with the market open 10am to 7pm on the High Road, the switch-on at 5.30pm, Ilford’s first drone show at 6.30pm and two fireworks displays, at 5.35pm and 6.45pm. It also had a Santa’s grotto, an archery session at Redbridge Town Hall, and a Back to the Future car parked at the Exchange Ilford entrance.

The 2026 day finishes an hour earlier, at 6.30pm, keeps the 5.30pm switch-on, and puts the fireworks in a single hour-long slot straight after it rather than two separate displays.

Parking, and the 5.30pm quirk

The two council car parks in the town centre are Ilford High Road (Lynton House), IG1 1NF, 51 spaces, and Mildmay Road, IG1 1DT, 66 spaces. Both have a 7 foot height limit and both are pay by RingGo or Paypoint.

The tariff at each is £2.20 for up to an hour, £3.85 for one to two hours, £5.50 for two to three hours and £11.00 for anything over three hours. There is no cheaper all-day band.

The useful detail is in the council’s own wording on its car parks page: the car parks are open 24 hours, but charging runs 7.30am to 5.30pm, and “if you park outside of these hours and on bank holidays it’s free”. So a car parked from 5.30pm, for the switch-on and the fireworks, pays nothing. A car parked at 2pm for the market pays £11.

Blue Badge holders park free in all council spaces. Full detail, including the private multi-storey at Exchange Ilford, is on our Ilford parking page.

Ilford station is on the Elizabeth line and is a two minute walk from the Town Hall, which is the sane option on a day when the High Road is full of people.

The other switch-ons in the borough

Vision Redbridge, which runs the borough’s other switch-ons, has now listed all six for 2026 on its switch-on page (checked 25 September). Each is 4pm to 6pm and free:

  • Friday 20 November: George Green, Wanstead
  • Saturday 21 November: Redbridge Town Hall, Ilford
  • Sunday 22 November: Valentines Mansion and Gardens
  • Tuesday 24 November: Hainault Library
  • Thursday 26 November: Ken Aston Square, Barkingside
  • Friday 27 November: Seven Kings Library

Vision’s 4pm to 6pm slot for the Town Hall sits alongside the BID’s all-day programme above; the fireworks are the BID’s. Last year the council did not publish its switch-on list until 18 November, in its December 2025 programme. Santa’s Workshop and the rest of the Christmas diary are on our Santa’s grotto page.
